Few people know that the black rubber soles of athletic shoes are reinforced with a white silica filler containing just 1% of carbon black for coloring purposes.

A few years ago, a new generation of highly dispersible silica was developed and is now used in the production of some of the most famous brands of athletic shoes. This silica provides manufacturers with greater flexibility in terms of design, weight and sole thickness. The soles of Nike’s Shox basketball shoes contain this new generation silica and feature increased durability, improved safety and better comfort for athletes.
