Protecting the environment and achieving sustainable development means reducing the consumption of new raw materials as well as taking care of the waste.
Responsible industries are, and amongst them the car industry, are making a lot of progresses in these direction and leads a global policy that seeks both to protect the environment and to safeguard quality of life around the plant.
Taking the Wuhan plant of PSA Peugeot Citroėn, in Hubei province as an example, 85% of production waste is recovered. World wide the Group's plants produce around 700,000 tonnes of metal waste a year. This waste is re-used in the iron and steel industry or in foundries. The other types of waste produced by the Group totalled 475,000 tonnes in 2002. This waste is highly diverse and disposal therefore requires a wide variety of specific processes. Today,
74 % of waste are recovered, with less than 18 % going to landfill. If we include metal waste, the recovery rate is 90 %. This assures a higher level of safety for the workers, the environment and the society.
