Essential resource of our planet, water is at the heart of automobile production. That’s why PSA Peugeot Citroën sees that the best use is made of it. Water is omnipresent in automobile production: each year PSA Peugeot Citroën uses about 20 million cubic meters of it for their domestic and industrial needs. All water used must be returned "clean" to nature out of respect for the environment.
The precious liquid is pumped and eventually purified for use at every stage of production: cooling welding machinery, washing sheet steel, water tightness testing, etc. At the end is the de-polluting process to eliminate the effluents: the most demanding water cycle in the factory.
This preoccupation with water use is part of a strictly observed global environmental management policy implemented throughout each stage of production.
To monitor the environmental progress of each structure, the Group has instituted an observation committee which follows the statistics from each production site. Although the automotive industry does not involve the use of any installations which constitute a high-risk to the environment, as defined by the 1996 SEVESO European Directives, PSA Peugeot Citroën is determined to make environmental management a priority. To this end it has started ISO 14001 certification of all its production sites.
