Chinese chemical companies have not been able to take full advantage of innovation due to the lack of research and development laboratories in the country. Top officials are beginning to recognize the importance of R&D as a key factor in competitiveness, following the lead of some neighboring countries who recently began taking steps in that direction.
Chinese chemical companies are increasingly exporting their products to very competitive international markets proving that the quality of their products is sufficient to compete with their foreign competitors. While thirty years ago, low-quality Chinese products could find a market, today, it is inconceivable to think of marketing such products.

Western companies must regularly revise the Material Safety Data Sheets
(MSDSs) for their products delivered to customers. The objective is to provide users with a maximum of product information. Since these updates contribute to the process of improving product quality (as well as providing important safety information), these MSDSs thus help a chemical company manage the life cycle of its products (design, manufacturing, distribution, use and end of life).
Innovation is an integral part of the chemistry industry. As such, new and better quality products, which in turn improve customers’ products, are generating a major share of profits. Some examples of recent successful innovations include reinforcing silica used to produce safer, energy-saving tires and a rare earth-based high-tech product which improves image quality and clarity of plasma screens.
